Work place stress and how to manage it

These days life is very hectic, and time is one of the vital factors in a work-life balance. To overcome the obstacle in our life we have to keep ourselves motivated and deal with every type of stress. In our work-life balance, stress can be classified into several categories. We can basically classify these into five main categories which are:

Exhaustion - can also be referred to as workload or overwork. This is a situation where the outcome is not sufficient enough to give it a satisfying shape. Core quality is lacking and the only way to achieve a proper outcome is to put more time into making it a worthwhile project or product. Working to make it productive and viable drains you out and at some point, you lag energy to keep it going.

Time line – Fast life has demanded a competitive environment. Stress may arise due to a committed timeline for an assignment. This is a situation where time is not enough to complete a task you have been delegated and the assigned time is short enough to complete your responsibilities. Non-delivery of the result may trigger anxiety of bad image and put a person under stress.

Conflict stress - this is a category where stress arise due to troublesome colleague or a stressful relationship between you and your line function including your manager, subordinate or your teammate or even at a different department level.

Lack of skill or capability - the situation where you do not know how to complete the task without a proper skillset or at which direction of work requires mentoring.
Unless you have proper skill or training, improvement in your skill without the help of someone is very difficult to complete and requires a supporting hand.

Lack of work satisfaction - no matter what you do, you do not get proper appreciation or rewards for your job achievements. This puts you in a situation where you lack the motivation to keep the flow going. Trying to complete the task finished in time or rush through it to complete can again have a negative effect on the quality and can give a lack of satisfaction on the outcome.

Remedial measure

In many ways we can handle this depend upon the causes and the reason due to which it has triggered.

Exhaustion - is caused due to over burning yourself and this pressure can be reduced by taking a small break from time to time. During working hours, try to take every half an hour or duration of one hour just a mini break so that the work pressure building in the thought can be broken.  Take a water break or loo break which will help to rejuvenate or refresh you from the mental thought process.

Timeline – The deadline to submit the project can put you in a defensive position if the project is not completed during the promised time. Use your active working hours. Depending upon the personality some are more active in the morning as compared to others who are active in the later part of the day. Assign your high performance time to such time-sensitive work where the product hours can be provided to such tasks. Completing the project ahead of the official deadline will provide an extra cushion of time to do the dry run or to go through again to see if there is anything missing in the project and if it is foolproof.

Conflict stress - Do not respond spontaneously - take some time to think and then respond. If you come across someone whose chemistry is different from yours, avoid irrelevant discussion and argument and only engage in relevant discussion rather than casual chat. Official communication can be dealt with through official emails keeping the content straight and avoiding any unwanted or irrelevant direct conversation.

Lack of skill or lack of capability – this can be one of the reasons for stress then take some time off from work to give yourself an edge by taking training, seminars or short courses which will help you again to give an enhanced scale of knowledge. Be assertive and say no if required and use the time for self-development in your free time.

Lack of work satisfaction - work satisfaction can be provided in many ways which include giving a higher responsibility and greater challenges. Employees can also be identified and awarded based on the work results achieved or obtained. Concentrate on your tasks without feeling any sort of guilt for turning down someone’s request if it is at the cost of work satisfaction without the proper effort put in to give it a completion.

Tips to include in your lifestyle to control and manage stress

Small changes in your lifestyle: start your day with meditation, exercise or any small activity that will give a freshness or positivity in your daily routine. Starting your day with energy gives a completely different aspect of lifestyle. Give yourself atleast 7 to 8 hours of sleep on a regular basis.

Help or advise – if a situation is too harsh and if required, seek your friend's support to come out of the stressful situation. Sometimes a piece of friendly advice or support in such a situation is a great relief and helpful. Don’t feel ashamed to share your situation with a true friend.

Change your attitude: any negative act or outcome to be handled with a positive attitude. Always think that it’s not an end and all the outcome has some positive meaning in life. Whatever happens, happens for a reason and always has some meaning, look for positivity in the situation.  Lower your self-expectations, understand your limitations and be kind to yourself.
